There’s nothing I love more then sprouts!!! All kinds! Right now I have an abundance of arugula and radish sprouts that are perfect for wraps and salads. They are so easy to grow. Just prepare your container with potting soil almost to the top. Spread a layer of seeds evenly across the top. Water down and then very, very lightly cover with another layer of potting soil. No more then 1/4 inch deep. Leave this in the sun and you should begin to see sprouts within 12-24 hours. Keep the soil moist and the pot in a sunny spot at all times for the best results! You should be able to harvest in 7-9 days.
In addition to sprouts I am experimenting with scrap gardening. I started with Romain lettuce which is starting to take off. These have been in water for about a week and a half. Once roots start to form I will transplant them to the garden.

I also take stems (not stalks, they are usually too woody) of herbs and vegetables and propagate them in water. I keep them in the sun and change the water every other day and soon roots start appear. Once the roots system appears healthy and strong I transplant these to a small pot and let them continue to grow in the window garden. In this picture you can see mint with a bunch of healthy roots that is just about ready for the soil. The two or Orange pots toward the end of this picture are basil and mint – both started this way. Next to that – green onion – so easy and awesome to have on hand! Just buy a bunch, cut of the greens then place the white portion, roots still in tact, in a small amount of water. You’ll get new greens over and over again!
Window gardening is a great way to keep a constantly rotating cycle of essential herbs and veggies going. I keep containers of mature plants outside and use these to propagate the new smaller plants that I can keep inside to have herbs at my fingertips. I always know I have more outside if I need it!
